and developed the modern medical science for about 80 years

On December 8th 2016, ‘CMC Medical History and Information Hall’ opened for visitors to have a glance of the history of Catholic medical missions.
Dispensary that started out on peril of their lives at the period of Catholic persecution and medical treatment-related activities
such as relief work for children became the foundation for establishment of St. Mary’s Hospital in 1936.
The history of CMC that has grown into a large-scale medical network in Korea with 8 affiliated hospitals and approximately 6,000 sickbeds is exhibited
in the CMC Medical History and Information Hall.

Research on Western Learning (西學) and Catholic Faith
Planting seeds for medical missions at the period of harsh Catholic persecution
Introduction of the Catholic Church and Western Medical Science The history of official medical missions by the Catholic Church of Korea is exhibited in the hall from the 17 ~ 18th century when the theory of western medical science was first introduced to Korea with ‘Han Yeok Seo Hak Seo (a book on western learning)’ by the Jesuit fathers involved in missionary activities in China to 1831 when Pope Gregory XVI established Joseon Parish. Furthermore, secret relief activities for children by the Catholic Church risking their lives and medical activities that stopped until 1866 owing to Byeongin Catholic Persecution are exhibited for visitors.

Blue-Eyed Missionaries and Brothers
Embracing the poor with Jesus Christ’s healing
Freedom of Faith and Foreign (Religious) Orders’ Activities When the freedom of religion was permitted in Korea in 1880s, the Catholic Church of Korea restarted the relief work for children and medical missions, and opened nursing homes. In 1988, the Sisters of St. Paul’s de Chartres first started the missionary in the Korea, followed by St. Benedictine Order and Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in 1990s. The exhibit hall displays a wide range of charitable activities and expansion of medical missions that 5 orders had developed.

Hospital Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Joseon Parish
Patience and devotion of 100,000 believers came to fruition.
Establishment of Hospital Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Joseon Parish In 1931, fund-raising events were held by Catholics to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Joseon Parish by building St. Mary’s Hospital. The exhibit hall shows various fund-raising activities that continued for 5 years by Catholics around the nation and the history of St. Mary’s Hospital that opened in May 11th 1936. The hall also exhibits medical charities that the established hospital steadily performed and the process of how St. Joseph’s Hospital, the basis for establishment of CMC, has been designated as the second affiliated hospital.

Foundation of the Catholic University and Establishment of CMC
Fostering competent medical practitioners and leading advanced healthcare
Establishment of the College of Medicine/Nursing After the Korean War, the Catholic Church of Korea organized a project to establish educational institutions in order to encourage long-term development of medical business. In April 1954, a college of medicine was established at Sungshin University (renamed as the Catholic University of Korea in February 1959) and in May 1954, St. Joseph Nursing School (elevated to the Department of Nursing, College of Medicine in December 1963) was established. The Catholic medical project paved the way for self-procurement of 3 elements, ‘hospital, doctor and nurse’. Establishment of Catholic Medical Center (CMC) The exhibit hall presents the development process of St. Mary’s Hospital that was authorized to be elevated as a general hospital in 1958 which became the basis for official establishment of CMC on February 1st 1962, and the development of affiliated hospitals that increased along with development of the University.

Medical Missions of Respect for Life
Delivering the love of Jesus Christ healing the world
The History of CMC’s Social Contribution The exhibit hall displays CMC’s social contribution activities that have continuously expanded the tradition of the Catholic Church’s medical charities that have prevailed from the period of Catholic Persecution according to the changes in time and situation. Respect for Life and Medical Mission Spreading throughout the World Additionally, the expansion of CMC’s medical missions and its systematic development beyond the people and religion that initiated in 1987 are displayed in the exhibit hall.
